DHIS2 is a configurable platform for data collection and analysis -- free and open source self-hosted software and a proud Digital Public Good. Today it is used in more than 100 countries. This includes use by more than 80 national ministries of health where it serves as the backbone for country health information systems. It has been estimated that 2.4 billion people (30% of the world’s population) live in countries where DHIS2 is deployed.
We are a well-funded not-for-profit project located at the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (UiO), where we operate as an independent software development organization. We work with and are supported by many global development organizations and are a World Health Organization collaborating center. DHIS2 is used every day around the world to manage routine health service delivery, COVID-19 surveillance and vaccination, Malaria elimination campaigns, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, Tuberculosis programs, maternal and child health, national education systems, health supply chain logistics, climate impacts on human health, and much more.

This role is part of the DHIS2 Training & Communications team with support from the Software Design team. Our work includes a large variety of digital and print media types, such as static and dynamic elements for our multiple websites, print materials and peripherals for in-person conferences and events, informative diagrams and visualizations for online training courses, engaging layouts for presentations and reports, graphic elements for video productions, and more.
In this role you will work with the communications team to develop new -- and iterate on existing -- visual design assets and communications products. You will also contribute to shaping our visual profile for a growing number of “brands” within HISP and DHIS2. Beyond the core team, this role can also potentially include a capacity-building component to strengthen visual communication within our network of partner organizations (HISP groups) in the global south.
This is a new position in the DHIS2 Training & Communications team. We are looking for motivated and experienced candidates who will work with us to shape this role and help us improve our visual communication impact.
What you'll do
- Design and produce print and digital communications assets, templates, and products, including but not limited to:
- Pictograms / Iconography / Illustrations
- Diagrams / Visual explainers
- Logo variations
- Patterns, visual design assets
- Presentations (slides, factsheets, etc.)
- Posters, banners, and other physical display elements
- Booklets, pamphlets, fliers
- “Swag” (stickers, t-shirts, etc.)
- Design and layout for prioritized text products (annual report, etc.)
- Design review and improvements to DHIS2 web properties, in coordination with external website vendors
- Support the online course production team with design input/assets as needed
- Support the video production team with design input/assets as needed
- Collaborate with the DHIS2 product design team to create iconography and illustrations for use in our software
- Provide ad hoc design support to teams within the larger DHIS2 project
- Work with the communications team lead on larger branding strategy and visual profiling efforts
- Potential: Lead capacity building efforts on visual design for HISP groups
- Several years of professional experience working with visual communication
- An expert eye for visual design principles like spacing, color, and rhythm, and experience applying those principles
- Motivation to produce and deliver digital and print assets based on a consistent, unified visual design language
- Excellent written and verbal English communication — you'll be communicating your solutions and collaborating with others every day
- Proficiency in one or more of our additional priority languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) is a plus

Location and Time Zones
You can work remotely from any country in the world or from our office in Oslo, Norway. If working remotely, we strongly prefer candidates who can have at least 4 hours of overlap with Central European Time Zone working hours. If you are located more than 2 time zones away from Europe, please indicate in your application how you will accommodate this difference. If you are located many timezones away and do not including any additional information in your application it may be automatically rejected.
Remote Work and Travel
We are a remote-first global team but we recognize the importance of meeting and collaborating with colleagues in person. You will have the opportunity to travel 1-3 times per year to meet with other members or your team. We host one annual in person gathering of the Training & Communications team during the DHIS2 Annual Conference in Oslo. There may be additional opportunities to travel for work related to DHIS2 projects in the field or other events. All travel expenses are fully covered.
We recognize that travel has an environmental impact, and so we work to limit travel to only what is essential and to mitigate or offset the impact of necessary travel we fund. We encourage the use of trains and other low-carbon transportation whenever this is a reasonable option.
This is a full-time position (80% possible) on an annual renewable contract. We are focused on building long-term contractor relationships. We support flexible work arrangements with generous holiday allowances, and we offer the option to renew for longer contract periods over time.
