Job Introduction

BBC Mobile Apps are looking for a Test Team Lead who is passionate about testing, as well as developing people. As a Test Team Lead you will lead the testers embedded in the engineering teams to deliver a world class mobile experience.

The ideal candidate would be someone who excels in people management and engagement, values communication, and collaborative approaches in finding the right solution, is willing and excited to learn new skills, and to share their knowledge with others.  You will have a real opportunity to influence the future of mobile at the BBC.

Reporting to the Test Manager and working with others in the Test Leadership group, you will be responsible for recruiting, managing, leading, setting direction and co-ordinating test across a group of product test teams or a programme of work. You will also be responsible for managing, coaching, and mentoring direct line reports by supporting and helping them to develop their strengths and invest in their talents.

One stage interview process combining a 20 minute presentation followed by interview questions.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the design and implementation of test approaches across a group of product test teams or programmes of work.
  • Recruit, lead, mentor, coach, develop and manage 6+ test engineers embedded in multidiscipline teams.
  • Provide test expertise and support to stakeholders at all levels in communicating strategy, product fit and effectiveness.
  • Own testing across complex, multi-team, distributed technology programmes.
  • Advocate and implement agile and lean development and testing principles, encourage continuous improvement, and ensure efficiency of the test process and practices.
  • Ensure troubleshooting and resolution of issues throughout the product life cycle is carried out.
  • Implementing test management and reporting frameworks across multiple teams.
  • Define risk-based test scopes, from a combination of product knowledge, user reach analytics and technical variation between devices/platforms.
  • Ensure automated tests and tools are used appropriately and are effective.
  • Work with other test leaders in the broader organisation to share best practice and standards.
  • Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and help introduce them where appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

The ideal candidate - You may have experience of some, but not necessarily all, of the following:

  • Experience of leading software testing – designing and implementing test approaches for complex online products in a fast-changing environment with rapid release cycles.
  • Experience in people management, including recruiting, leading, mentoring, coaching, and career development.
  • Experience of innovating in testing technology and processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of automation testing frameworks.
  • Experience in testing mobile applications – iOS and Android.
  • Leadership and collaboration inside and beyond the team. The ability to influence diverse and senior stakeholders effectively.
  • Expertise in agile software development methodologies including behaviour and test-driven development.
  • Expertise in problem solving and providing creative solutions.
  • Good written and spoken communications skills; comfortable engaging at all levels in the organization.
