Job Description
As a Technical Art Director at Ubi MTL, you will be a high-level expert on the potential, capabilities and limits of our technology while maintaining a clear vision of the overall project. You will play a key role by providing expertise, tools and support to guide a game — and its creators — toward success.
Working with the other directors from the early stages, you will help define the project intentions before committing resources. You will account for measurable factors such as rendering, performance and memory, as well as less tangible factors such as timing and pacing. Taking a realistic and forward-looking approach, you will put concrete plans in place to realize ambitious ideas.
Although each development day brings expected and unexpected challenges, you will always keep a global perspective. As a strategic thinker and tactical planner, you will balance immediate priorities with long-term goals, always considering the future impact of your decisions.
What you will do
- Collaborate with the leadership team to define the overall vision and assess technical feasibility.
- Identify and analyze risks related to different aspects (game engine, data, features, etc.).
- Evaluate existing tools and, when needed, design custom solutions to support art pipelines while maintaining the project vision.
- Communicate with technical artists and assistant technical art directors to share information, enforce standards, and provide references and feedback.
- Solve complex and high-priority problems, and approve technical specifications.
- Prepare project reviews, proposing improvements to optimize the creation and integration of graphical data.
- Anticipate technological evolutions and stay informed of market trends to establish best practices and share them internally and across the industry.
- Participate in recruitment to grow your technical art team and broaden its expertise.
Qualifications
What you bring to the team
- Experience in art, technical art or programming, combined with strong leadership skills.
- Mastery of game engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal) and their constraints, 2D art tools (e.g., Photoshop), 3D software (e.g., 3DS Max, Maya, Substance Painter) and scripting languages (e.g., C#, Python, JavaScript, MaxScript).
- Familiarity with bug-tracking software (e.g., Jira) and version control systems (e.g., Perforce).
- An innovative, collaborative, empathetic and solution-oriented mindset.
- Strong critical thinking, time management and organizational skills.
- A detail-oriented approach, high curiosity, adaptability and resourcefulness.
What to send us
- Your CV highlighting your achievements, skills and shipped games.
- A portfolio or documented samples of your work (include visuals or a link to your online portfolio).
