Technical Animation Director

Position description

As a Technical Animation Director at Ubi MTL, you will be at the heart of the project's technological and artistic innovation for an unannounced AAA project. You will guide teams in creating smooth, expressive and performant animation systems while ensuring coherence between the creative vision and technical feasibility.

Your role will combine leadership, technical expertise and passion for animation. You will be a key facilitator between animation, rigging, programming and tools teams, ensuring pipelines are robust, scalable and suited to the project's ambitions.

What you will do

  • Design, implement and maintain a performant, scalable animation pipeline adapted to project needs.
  • Collaborate with tools teams to develop or improve scripts in MotionBuilder (Python).
  • Work closely with animators and programmers to design and improve animation systems in the game engine.
  • Support the implementation of procedural animation systems and full-body IK with animation programmers.
  • Ensure animation systems are compatible with character customization requirements.
  • Collaborate with creators of animatable systems (riggers) to balance artistic quality and technical performance.
  • Document processes and support technical animators and teams in their daily tasks.

Qualifications

What you bring to the team

  • Education: Degree in 3D animation, computer science, software engineering or another related field.
  • Experience: 7 years of experience in game industry animation, animatable systems development or programming, including 3 years in leadership.
  • Technical expertise: Strong mastery of game engines (Unity, Unreal) and 3D software (MotionBuilder, 3ds Max and Maya). Good understanding of scripting languages (Python, C#, JavaScript and MaxScript), motion capture and state machines.
  • Tools and methodologies: Experience with bug tracking software (Jira) and version control systems (Perforce).
