Job Description

As a Senior Visual Effects Artist at Ubisoft Montreal, you will play a key role in mentoring the VFX team and creating spectacular visual effects that enrich gameplay and immerse players in our worlds. Whether smoke, fire, explosions, precipitation or stunts, your creations will enhance immersion and inspire awe.

You will combine artistic vision and technical expertise, adapting to a variety of tools while prioritizing high-quality, real-time visual effects. You will support the team in producing optimized effects, manage priorities and ensure essential resources such as the texture library are maintained.

What you will do

  • Mentor and evaluate the work of the VFX team, covering both artistic aspects (textures, animations) and technical performance.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to understand the creative vision, set priorities and maintain an optimized texture library.
  • Create realistic effects for the environment, gameplay and cinematics using particle systems and custom textures.
  • Work with programmers and technical artists to define requirements and develop appropriate tools.
  • Respect technical constraints to design functional and aesthetic effects.
  • Integrate your visual effects into the game engine.
  • Refine effects based on playtest results and team feedback, ensuring their optimization.
  • Balance creative ambitions with project constraints while taking feedback into account.

Qualifications

What you bring to the team

  • Mastery of simulation software such as Embergen or Houdini.
  • Proficiency with 2D tools like Photoshop and 3D software such as Maya or 3DS Max.
  • Experience with game engines like Unity or Unreal.
  • Good understanding of vector mathematics and fundamental artistic principles such as lighting, composition, proportion and color theory.
  • Strong attention to detail and a sense of artistic quality.
  • Leadership skills to guide and inspire colleagues.
  • Collaborative mindset and openness to feedback.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of shader writing and optimization is an asset.
