Job Introduction

BBC Monitoring is funded by the license fee, providing our customers with 80 years of expertise and sharing the benefits of our extensive partnership network. Our mission is to provide coverage of international media in more than 100 languages.
The tools we create for our journalists are web-based editing and publication, plus video capture and streaming to users.

Main Responsibilities
We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer in our BBC Monitoring Development team.
We are looking for an experienced DevOps engineer with a good breadth of knowledge, covering on premises and AWS hosting to automated deployment of software. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and demonstrate your DevOps engineering skills working in a cutting edge and challenging field.
You will be involved in designing and developing the products and services that form the foundation of the BBC Monitoring (and the wider BBC) technology estate. You’ll be part of a highly acclaimed self-organising, cross-functional, agile team. You will be involved in the complete lifecycle from scoping through to testing and maintaining key services across a range of platforms.
Are you the right candidate?
Here are the technical skills we are looking for:
• Proven expertise securely operating and troubleshooting Linux systems, ideally Rocky/Red Hat.
• Hands on experience of deploying open source / proprietary software with a Linux platform using continuous integration methodologies and infrastructure as code e.g. Jenkins, Ansible, CloudFormation.
• Experience with hardware servers, virtual machines, firmware patching and remote management.
• Experience of AWS cloud technologies, e.g. S3, SQS, Lambda and EC2
• Good understanding of key network technologies, including TCP/IP, QoS, VLANs, Multicast
Other desirable skills are:
• Experience in at least one scripting language e.g. Python, Groovy, bash
• Experience of using software control systems e.g. Git
• Experience of system installation (e.g. PXEboot), configuration and administration
• Experience of working with databases. E.g. Mysql, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch.
• Engaged with current best security practices.
• Experience of service infrastructure design using virtualisation technologies and containers.
• Experience of single sign on e.g. OIDC
• Experience of Video Streaming technologies.
• Some experience of working with agile (Scrum/Kanban) methodologies.
