Reporting To: Head of Quantitative Engineering

Location: This role will ideally be based in our London office, with time spent between home and the office, and some travel between our Phoenix offices (i.e. Edinburgh / Wythall). Please read about Phoenix Flex here

We are pleased to announce an incredible, new career opportunity to join us here at Phoenix Group as a Quantitative Engineer to join our Quantitative Engineering team within the Asset Management (AM) function. Joining at this early stage you will be working in a fast paced and greenfield environment to help establish the team and build the foundations of the platform.

Context – AM Quant Team

Quantitative Engineering is a newly established team within Phoenix Asset Management. Working side by side with our portfolio managers, actuaries, and structurers, Quants will develop tools and models that enable us to make informed decisions to optimize our assets and risk and identify market opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain quantitative tools and models for the pricing, risk management, and trading of life insurance products, assets and derivatives.
  • Build and implement new tools for the wider investment team, that provide quantitative support in decision making, asset selection, deal structuring, and understanding/monitoring of risk.
  • Support with idea generation to identify market opportunities to improve overall business performance.
  • Collaborate with other team members to identify and solve complex quantitative problems, while being approachable and flexible
  • Take ownership of platform issues that affect our delivery – escalating as necessary to achieve resolution
  • Improve existing tools and processes through automation, general code quality and efficiency, and test coverage.

  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills

  • The ability to sense check numbers, perform quick “back of the envelope” calculations and build intuition over results
  • A “get things done” attitude

Qualifications

  • University Degree or ideally Masters’ Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Actuarial Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative field

Knowledge & Experience:

Essential

  • Python programming experience, at least 2+ years demonstrated experience
  • Beacon platform or similar e.g. Athena
  • Demonstrated experience in pension schemes and/or life insurance industry
  • Knowledge of the UK insurance regulatory landscape including Solvency II and Matching Adjustment
  • Experience with Excel / VBA

Desirable

  • Experience with SQL
  • Cloud development experience (e.g. AWS / Azure)
  • Some knowledge of investment and fixed income producs, for example derivatives, credit, interest rates and/or inflation would be valuable, but not essential
  • Familiarity with Software Development Lifecycle and development best practice

The ideal candidate will come from the life insurance / pensions industry and has worked in a professional Python development environment.
