Principal Technical Designer

Position description

As a Principal Technical Designer, you will be responsible for creating and implementing complex, technical and systemic design elements in a game.

You will primarily be a game or level designer recognized for your technical abilities, working within a production design or multidisciplinary team.

Acting as a technical reference for your team, you will help, support and advise your peers as needed. You may also be called upon to become the project's technical expert on a specific game element.

What you will do

  • Be responsible for the realization and implementation of the technical elements of a complete game feature by collaborating closely with technical directors, programmers and other disciplines.
  • Act as a technical expert on a specific topic, and in that capacity be responsible for tools, documentation, technical support as well as identifying and sharing best practices.
  • Participate in the optimization and validation of data by ensuring your colleagues comply with the technical standards for your area of expertise while taking budget constraints into account.
  • Participate in advanced data debugging through to the very end of production.
  • Provide periodic feedback to design leadership, such as suggestions for improving tools and methods, etc.
  • Participate in testing new features or tools before they are rolled out to the rest of the team.
  • Perform production tasks within a team as a game or level designer + prototype gameplay features during game design.
  • Design and implement in the game more complex, more abstract design elements that present a technical challenge or have repercussions across the game.

Qualifications

What you bring to the team

  • 8 years of experience in game or level design (with a more technical profile)
  • Ease in understanding and communicating in technical language + the ability to clearly express your ideas (written and oral)
  • Good adaptability, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A user-oriented mindset
  • Great curiosity: you have a passion for understanding how things work
  • Experience with different engines and platforms (an asset)
  • Experience with multiple 2D/3D creation software (an asset)
  • Experience in programming/scripting (an asset)
