Platform Engineering Consultant

Beacon

Beacon offers a four-day work week with a focus on efficiency and a healthy work-life balance (Mon-Thurs, 32hrs)

Only considering candidates eligible to work in London, UK ⚠️

We're looking for a Platform Engineering consultant who can make a huge contribution to our engineering team as we design and build our world-class product for modern charities.

At Beacon we’re a growing technology startup building the best nonprofit-focused CRM in the world. We passionately believe in the power of technology to make a difference.

Our technology stack is built around JavaScript running on AWS and GCP. The front-end web app is built with React, making extensive use of Material UI. Beacon's back-end infrastructure is in Node.js, based around microservices running on AWS Lambda. All new endpoints are written using GraphQL, and we're big advocates. Our database infrastructure is a combination of Postgres and Google BigQuery. We're on a journey to introduce more TypeScript into our stack wherever we can!

Are you a seasoned Platform Engineer or DevOps Engineer who thrives on empowering teams and delivering tangible results? We're looking for an expert consultant to join our growing tech team for an intensive, high-impact 8-week engagement.

You'll be instrumental in shaping our infrastructure-as-code journey, working directly with our in-house team to deliver a critical migration and embed best-practice principles that will last long after your contract ends.

Responsibilities
  • Hands-on Mentorship & Delivery: Work side-by-side with a junior DevOps engineer to successfully migrate a currently deployed AWS system into a robust, repeatable Terraform codebase.
  • Best Practice Implementation: Introduce, document, and evangelise modern DevOps/Platform Engineering best practices across areas like infrastructure testing, modularity, state management, and CI/CD pipeline integration.
  • Architectural Guidance: Review the current AWS system architecture and provide expert advice and recommendations for potential improvements to enhance scalability, resilience, cost-efficiency, and security.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a DevOps Consultant, Platform Engineer, or SRE in a production environment.
  • Deep expertise in Terraform for managing complex AWS infrastructure (e.g., VPC, EC2, Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, IAM, etc.).
  • Strong practical knowledge of AWS and its core services.
  • A passion for mentoring and teaching, with a demonstrated ability to transfer technical knowledge effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Details of engagement

  • Duration: 8 Weeks, Monday to Thursday
  • Start Date: January 2026
  • Location: On site: Shoreditch, London, UK
  • Day rate: £750

As a team we prefer to be together in our office (4-6 New Inn Broadway, London, EC2A 3PR) and we'd want you to join us - so this is not a remote role.
