This role is responsible for leading the Mass Participation team to achieve ambitious fundraising and supporter acquisition targets, through a portfolio of third-party events (such as London Marathon and Great North Run), expanding the growth of our flagship Walk of Light campaign and delivering new mass participation products.
As our Mass Participation Lead, you will be an accomplished fundraiser with a proven track record of delivering and growing large-scale third-party and Blood Cancer UK owned mass participation events. You will be ambitious in achieving income and supporter acquisition targets, but also a risk-taker who will design innovative products.
Whilst there is no fixed number of days per week required to attend the office, the successful candidate will be required to travel to meet internal and external stakeholders, attend monthly and quarterly team days in the London office and travel nationally to away days and fundraising events.

Key Responsibilities
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
- To support the Head of Public Fundraising to develop and execute the 2023-28 Mass Participation strategy and accompanying plans and budgets to deliver growing net income in line with wider organisational strategy.
- Accountable for ensuring all Mass Participation activities are monitored for effectiveness, ensuring they meet operating plan targets, work within agreed ROI/LTV and income targets, and support the wider strategic aims.
- Lead on the development of new mass participation fundraising products
- Lead and champion the growth of the Walk of Light fundraising campaign
- Ensure the delivery of excellent supporter care across all audiences in the Mass Participation programme.
- To manage the performance and personal development of direct reports, reflecting Blood Cancer UK’s organisational values and behaviours.
- To work collaboratively with colleagues in the Public Fundraising team, Engagement Directorate and the wider organisation to help deliver the strategy
- Monitor and manage team budgets on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, including proposing effective corrective action and activities when performance is not on track and developing business cases for investment when necessary.
- Work collaboratively with internal relationships at all levels, and manage key relationships with external stakeholders
- To ensure all team activities within Mass Participation team comply with charity fundraising law and regulations and adhere to Blood Cancer UK’s compliance standards.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Knowledge
- Proven team leadership and working skills, with a track record of successfully leading cross-functional teams to deliver largescale projects or events; including the ability to work with and through others, set and achieve high standards, support and motivate others to develop and excel
- Ability to analyse the performance and key trends of complex programmes and produce clear proposals for improvements and growth; and then effectively plan, implement and evaluate changes to deliver growth
Skills
- Ability to work collaboratively - consults others and shares expertise, know-how and ideas with colleagues for best results
- Ability to lead and manage a team, including staff development, coaching and performance management
- Experience of managing relationships with agencies and external suppliers, including reviewing supplier relationships, tendering/pitching and the possessing the ability to manage and influence external partners
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand and convey complex conceptual ideas and information to a variety of audiences using a range of formats
Experience
- Extensive experience in mass participation product fundraising
- Experience of innovation, product development or transforming ideas, concepts and consumer insights into viable products
- In-depth experience of strategic planning and budget setting in the complex range of activities under Events Fundraising, with demonstrable successful delivery of annual and long-term plans and a demonstrable track record of growing income
- Experience of successfully developing and implementing supporter journeys to maximize net income, average gifts and repeat support

Location: Working agile means we changed from having a culture where people are expected to be in the office from 9am to 5pm to one where we’re much more focused on what they deliver.
