Job Introduction

The BBC is one of the world's most respected media organisations, reaching a weekly global audience of 450 million people. Media Services provides Android, iOS and web players that BBC iPlayer, Sounds, News and Sport are built around. We are a vital link between content production and online users, and we help deliver a staggering 54 million hours of iPlayer streaming per week on average. Users are rapidly shifting from broadcast to streaming, so our role is crucial to keeping the BBC relevant.

This is an opportunity to work with a unique and challenging software stack that's quite different from the web pages, apps or APIs you might be used to. As a Junior Tester, you’ll learn about streaming technologies like DASH and HLS, and grow to understand how BBC programmes are served to users via content distribution networks (CDNs). You’ll also find out how our players are built, how the pieces fit together, and how they are integrated into the apps and web pages our viewers and listeners love.

With support from senior Testers and Engineers, you’ll own work items throughout the testing process, raising and retesting defects and keeping the Product Manager informed about progress and risks.

Interview Process

There will be two interviews, each around 60-90 minutes long and conducted remotely. Questions will be both technical and values-based, and there will be a hands-on testing exercise.

Main Responsibilities

We're looking for someone to focus on manual testing, both scripted and exploratory. But there may be opportunities to contribute to test automation over the long term.

You'll work with two teams covering web and native mobile players, and your responsibilities will include:

•    Exploratory and ad-hoc testing of new features and enhancements

•    Manual regression testing of release builds

•    Contributing to test plans and other documentation

•    Building good working relationships with testers in other areas

•    Helping improve ways of working by contributing to retrospectives

Are you the right candidate

Your attitude and approach are more important than the tools you've worked with. Here's a summary of our ideal candidate:

•    You’re at home working with Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices

•    You’re comfortable testing with or without scripts

•    You have an enquiring mind, and never stop wondering “what if…?”

•    You're methodical and organised, and can judge how much testing is enough

•    You grasp technical details easily, and can understand how software works under the surface

•    You’re quick to pick up new skills, and take pride in constantly improving and developing yourself

•    You communicate well and can make clear, well-reasoned points

•    You're competent with test tracking tools like Qase or TestRail

•    You know when to ask for help and when to offer it

•    You anticipate problems and suggest creative solutions

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants.  Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us.  Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC.  We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles.  The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.  We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
