Hiring Manager: Senior Investment Manager – Structured Credit, Asset Management

Location: This role will be based in our London office, with some time spent working from home and from time-to-time, travelling across Phoenix offices. You can read more about Phoenix Flex here.

We have an incredible opportunity to join us here at Phoenix Group as a Senior Investment Analyst to join the Structured Credit & Alternatives team within Private Markets Asset Management function.

The role

The Senior Investment Analyst is to work as part of the Structured Credit & Alternatives team within Private Markets. This role has three core areas of focus:

  • Assisting in analysing and executing investment opportunities within the Structured Credit & Alternatives asset classes
  • Supporting the wider Private Markets team and the Asset Management business unit in structuring & executing complex transactions and undertaking business critical projects
  • Developing the Private Markets proposition to service the Shareholder requirements and support the Policyholder assets as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)

The successful candidate will be a key contributor to a team with wide ranging responsibilities across Private Markets contributing both directly and indirectly to achieving Phoenix’s key strategic objectives. The individual should aim to be recognised internally and externally as a key contact for any new asset classes targeted by the Private Markets team, complex transactions executed across Private Markets and as a contributor to successful projects with far reaching impact across Asset Management. The Senior Investment Analyst will report directly to the Head of Structured Credit & Alternatives and be expected collaborate across Private Markets and Asset Management to achieve team goals. This role provides an opportunity for a driven individual to develop new skills, experience new asset verticals and gain a detailed understanding of the investment process for a Solvency II insurer.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in executing transactions within the Structured Credit asset class – Assess, structure, present the investment case and execute structured credit transactions (including securitisations, repacks, insured credit and other bespoke arrangements) to back liabilities generated by Phoenix’s bulk-purchase annuity proposition
  • Assist in pricing and executing complex transactions across Private Markets – Become the team SME on pricing tools, targeted financial metrics and the wider Phoenix platform in order to maximise execution efficiency across the Private Markets team
  • Assist in MI and Tool development – Use transaction derived knowledge to develop targeted team MI and enhance key tools to enable the wider team’s capabilities to grow beyond the individual’s direct contribution
  • Develop new asset propositions– Engage with external stakeholders to understand current and future asset capability requirements, build the business case for new capabilities to be developed and assist in new asset capability approval processes
  • Contribute to Private Markets Strategy– Support the development of wider team strategy by contributing to team produced content, internal forums and bulk-purchase annuity pricing
  • Collaborate closely with all Phoenix Asset Management teams
  • Develop Asset Management Subject Matter Expertise – This will support development of capital market solutions capabilities for the Group, and portfolio optimisation for insurance balance sheets (e.g. Matching Adjustment, Solvency II and UK Life Insurance regulatory environment).

What we're looking for

Minimum Criteria:

Experience

  • Experience of structuring assets within a complex regulatory framework, ideally within a bank or asset manager structured credit, securitisation or asset financing team
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills and the ability to work quickly with high attention to detail
  • Open to other transferable experience where the individual can demonstrate strong cashflow analysis skills, credit fundamentals and experience of structures reliant on specific pools of assets (e.g. derivative desk or rating agency covering these counterparties / assets)
  • Proficient use of MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Intex, VBA a plus.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree. Bachelor or Master of Science a plus.
  • Other financial professional qualifications beneficial but not required (e.g. CFA, CQF)

Personal Attributes

  • Experience within wider fixed income universe helpful but not required
  • Strong understanding of non-recourse financing structures, repacking of assets and other core structured finance concepts is key.
  • Ability to self-prioritise and manage multiple demanding stakeholders is required
  • Strong analytical skills, problem-solving ability and research capabilities
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to utilise influence to drive projects and outcomes outside of immediate reporting structure
  • Comfortable managing complex and detailed projects and managing (senior) stakeholders effectively
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced environment

Skills

  • Ability to assign priorities to multiple activities while ensuring integrity, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Strong communication skills – ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and concise fashion both verbally and in written communications.
  • Highly collaborative, proactive and flexible contributor in a dynamic and agile team.
