At this exciting time for Blood Cancer UK, we are delighted to create this new role developing our health intelligence approach. We are seeking a dedicated professional to lead the development of our blood cancer health data approach. This will involve maintaining and enhancing a portfolio of external facts, statistics, and evidence as well as overseeing our use of this insight internally.
You will have expert knowledge of NHS and UK health data sets, alongside a relevant qualification or equivalent experience in quantitative analysis. You will be confident in handling health datasets, and be able to summarise large amounts of data and information in a way that is understandable to the relevant audience.
Your role will involve sourcing and managing data relevant to our mission particularly blood cancer data sets, clinical trials and blood cancer drugs pipeline, and other national data sets that impact blood cancer outcomes. You will be responsible for data collection and analysis and supporting internal teams to use our data with confidence, particularly statistics that we use in our external communications and messaging. You will lead on the associated data governance for the collection and use of relevant external blood cancer data sets, working in partnership with colleagues managing internal data. Alongside this you will identify key health data gaps and work with others to develop approaches to address these, including through collaboration with external partners.

Expected travel for this role is: Majority of our roles can be performed hybrid. Required to attend the London office 2-4 days per month, plus two all-staff away days and external meetings as required.

Key Responsibilities
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities:
To lead the development of a health data strategy which enables the following areas of activity:
1. Build and enable the use of strong health data charity content:
- Maintain a portfolio of regularly updated external facts, statistics and evidence relevant to the needs of the organisation.
- Proactively identify and source data which is relevant to our mission and strategy, requesting such data where needed.
- Ensure Blood Cancer UK maximises data collection and analysis to enhance our ability to ensure nobody dies of blood cancer or their treatment.
- Be the key internal source of expertise regarding statistics relevant to blood cancer ensuring other teams make the most appropriate and impactful use of this data. You will lead our work on external blood cancer data, collaborating closely with internal data and insight teams.
- Ensure Blood Cancer UK is able to plan for data releases
- Be able to explain the potential implications and limitations of data sets
- Be a champion for the use of blood cancer data across all our work and provide relevant expertise.
- Lead on the governance and data management systems for the collection and use of relevant external blood cancer data sets, working in partnership with colleagues managing internal data.
2. Lead and influence change in blood cancer health data:
- Horizon scan, identify gaps and/or opportunities to develop blood cancer health data and support prioritisation for action
- Hold a strategic overview of all mission team projects to ensure health data is considered and remains a core part of the approach
- Champion and develop an approach to drive forward the data recommendations in the Blood Cancer Action Plan.
- Commission external organisations to obtain and/or analyse health data from across the UK
3. Collaborate with others to ensure blood cancer health data has an environment to flourish in:
- Internally, work within the existing organisational data management systems to store, manage and report on data, including being part of the internal Blood Cancer Insight Network.
- Work collaboratively with existing data, insight and digital teams to ensure alignment in how we manage and use data across the organisation.
- Support internal teams to develop monitoring and evaluation processes around mission-focussed products and services, and their impact on broader health data sets
- Externally, represent Blood Cancer UK on relevant forums and government working groups
- Work closely with the Blood Cancer UK clinical trials support service to ensure the data arising from the service informs our wider data insight.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- A relevant degree or equivalent experience of quantitative analysis
- Expert knowledge of NHS and UK health datasets and the operating environment
- Substantial experience of analysing health data, managing multiple projects, and confident using data and insight to improve performance and make decisions
- Demonstrable experience in operationalising large datasets and statistical analysis, with the ability to review and summarise large amounts of data and information in a way that is understandable to the relevant audience through collaboration with relevant teams
- Experience or ability to learn how to manage the technical elements of data storage and manipulation with minimal supervision
- Good knowledge of epidemiology and relevant research methods
- Experience of building and maintaining a network of relationships with peers in external organisations
- Experience of communicating information and statistics to lay audiences with the commitment to understanding users’ and audiences’ needs and behaviours, and developing products, campaigns, services and communications based on meeting these needs
- Fluent with digital collaboration tools; experience of using SQL Server and PowerBI or similar .
- Good working knowledge of data protection principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrable ability to communicate succinctly face to face, over the phone, and online with a wide range of stakeholders internally and externally.
- Ability to rapidly understand high-level concepts and analyse processes
- Able to remain informed about digital improvements and potentially useful data sets in the wider health and social care landscape
