Job Vacancy: Campaigner (one year contract)

Location: Anywhere in Canada.  We have offices in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Reports to: Co-Head of Program (Nature & Biodiversity)

Details: Full-time (four days per week, 28 hours per week, Monday to Thursday), one year contract, unionized

Salary: $64,643 CAD per year (this amount will be prorated for partial years of service)

About the role:

Greenpeace Canada (GPC) is seeking a Campaigner to develop and implement local, national and global campaign strategies and tactics, providing expertise to a Greenpeace campaign to further Greenpeace Canada’s strategy and long-term environmental and social justice objectives.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and implement approved campaign plans and strategies to achieve campaign, engagement and fundraising goals (including, but not limited to mobilization, non-violent direct action, lobbying, research, communications).
  2. Maintain an active liaison with potential and established allied groups, coalition partners and communities.  Actively seek out and participate in discussions with influential individuals and groups.  Communicate with federal/provincial officials related to environmental policies and issues.
  3. Research and analyze a wide range of specialized material on campaign issues and strategies.  Maintain an in-depth and current knowledge of campaign-related issues at global and national levels (as well as for the various provinces where relevant).
  4. In close collaboration with the Communications Campaigner and Digital Campaigner, develop media contacts, solicit media coverage, promote campaigns through digital media and organize media events.
  5. Act as campaign spokesperson for both English and French speaking news media, social media, as well as representing Greenpeace in other public fora.
  6. Prepare campaign outputs and tactics, including written materials.
  7. Promote support within Greenpeace and to the public to advance campaign goals.  Work with mobilization campaigners to organize rallies, protests, demonstrations, actions and public events.  Make presentations and respond to public speaking requests. Reach out to initiate collaboration opportunities with key groups.
  8. Lead cross-functional, national and global projects as needed as per established GP project management processes. Act as project lead within the project management framework. Oversee approved project budgets.
  9. Respond to public inquiries about campaign issues and other matters.  Prepare materials and publications.  Attend and/or organize public events, such as conferences.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated commitment, knowledge and passion for environmental and social justice issues.
  • Bilingual: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French. Candidates who do not consider themselves perfectly bilingual are still encouraged to apply.
  • Significant campaigning experience, both in a national and local context including strategy, planning, and execution of effective, multi-faceted campaigns that engage the public and change the behaviour of corporations and governments
  • Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis languages are highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities are also highly desirable.
  • Ability to prioritize and focus
  • Strong, engaging spokesperson, with the ability to do media interviews in both French and English
  • Digital campaigning skills, especially on social media
  • Strong interpersonal skills – experience as a leader/team builder and working in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team
  • Flexibility – willingness to pitch in and work in different campaign areas, and subjects as needed
  • Subject matter knowledge: science, policy and politics related to nature and biodiversity (ideally federal and across provinces and territories)
  • Project and time management experience
  • Established professional network in Canada
  • Experience designing advocacy and corporate campaigns, including research, strategic analysis, goal-setting, communications framing, and tactic design.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities and Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience with NVDA tactics (non-violent direct action) or willingness to learn
  • Experience with or understanding of fundraising and how it interacts with campaigns
  • Knowledge of the overall goals and campaign activities of Greenpeace
  • Knowledge of Indigenous rights, the history of colonization in Canada and its present day impacts, anti-oppression theories

You will work with colleagues across Canada and collaborate with other Greenpeace offices around the world.

Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
