The Vancouver office of Smith and Andersen is currently seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to join our Mechanical team. You’re all about prioritization. What You’ll Do
- Is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia and capable of taking professional responsibility for fire protection design and signing and sealing all fire protection related documents.
- Fully understands fire protection Codes and Standards relevant for the project and is able to communicate all requirements to the internal project team, external project team, owner, and authorities having jurisdiction.
- Prepares, or assists Principal-in-charge or PM with, the development of fire protection system concepts (e.g. design brief) and concept report.
- Reviews and manages the fire protection design in terms of construction budgets and is able, at a high level, to warn of decisions that will exceed available budget.
- Ensures proper coordination of document with the internal and external project team (architect, interior designer, and other disciplines).
- Responsible for reviewing all fire protection deliverables for the project whether reports, calculations, drawings, or/and specifications. Reviews for completeness and accuracy at various stages of development and as defined by internal total quality management.
- Prepares all fire protection calculations and selects all equipment, including detailed fire protection hydraulic calculations. May assign tasks to designer and CAD/BIM Technician where appropriate; however, is fully capable of performing tasks.
- Prepares detailed fire protection drawings, including standpipe, sprinkler, fire extinguishers and any specialty fire protection systems (pre-action, gas suppression, etc.). Drawings will include complete sprinkler head layouts, hydraulically sized piping and all details required for permit, tender and construction.
- Assists in the preparation of project specifications. Prepares detailed specifications for all fire protection scope including sprinkler systems, standpipe, specialty systems (pre-action, gas suppression, etc.).
- Applies fire protection skills and knowledge to managing the construction administration process of a project.
- Prepares all fire protection change notices or reviews change notices issued by contract administration team.
- Promotes and enforces company standards relating to project administration, documentation and processes such as total quality management.
- Where requested by the Principal-in-charge or Associate Principal act as contract administrator for designated projects, ensuring timely completion of all contract administration activities for project.
- Coordinates with the contract administration team regarding drawing reviews, proper set up of contract administration process and site activities.
- Keeps the Principal-in-charge, Associate Principal or PM advised of all changes in scope of fire protection work and prepares amendments to the contract (e.g. Request of Additional fee-RAF) for review and submission to client.
- Responsible for ensuring tasks are completed both accurately and with the assigned hours/fee.
- Responds to both technical and financial queries related to the project.
Who You Are
- 5 or more years of fire protection engineering experience in residential, commercial and institutional buildings
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.
- Advanced working knowledge of the provincial building code and NFPA standards
- Demonstrate a strong leadership qualities and ability to work independently
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a complex environment, dealing with multiple projects and clients
- Possess sound communications skills as demonstrated through client and staff relations
- Demonstrate experience working with other consultants and contractors, and coordination of major projects
- Have excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
- Strong knowledge of engineering concepts, methods and standards.
- Demonstrates initiative and practical problem solving.
Nice to Have
- LEED certification / Experience implementing sustainable design (LEED projects) is an asset
- Member of the BC Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers
