The Vancouver office of Smith + Andersen is currently seeking experienced Fire Protection Designers. You’re a trained designer with a passion for fire protection services design. You never shy away from a hydraulic calculation, and have the skills to produce drawings in Autodesk Revit. What You’ll Do
- Prepares fire protection drawings, including standpipe, sprinkler, fire extinguishers and any specialty fire protection systems (pre-action, gas suppression, etc.). Drawings will include complete sprinkler head layouts, hydraulically sized piping and all details required for permit, tender and construction.
- Design fire protection systems in accordance with the requirements of municipal or provincial building code and NFPA standards.
- Check layouts and services for continuity; developing various fire protection systems layouts in coordination with the structural, architectural, and electrical components of a building.
- Create project specific details to clarify project scope and contribute to building sections to assist with interference coordination between building systems.
- Prepares fire protection calculations and selects all equipment, including detailed fire protection hydraulic calculations Prepare calculations to size equipment and prepare equipment schedules that are project specific.
- Coordinate with necessary project consultants to review equipment. Ensure that a complete and correct design is achieved.
- Respond to both internal and external communication regarding project or design status; report to the principal and/or project manager regarding the design status.
- Liaise with all project consultants; coordinate design requirements with all disciplines and supervise drawings between other disciplines; check layouts of fire protection services for interferences with other components of the building such as structure, ceilings, etc.
- Familiar with structural, architectural, and electrical models to appreciate space limitations and interferences.
- Design fire protection systems directly in Revit/CAD; adhering to company BIM/CAD standards.
- Work with clash/coordination reports, assisting with model audits and overall health of the model.
- Liaise with suppliers and/or manufacturers for design support, equipment and component selection.
- Assist with the distribution of work between the internal design team and attend project/technical meetings; where required.
- Assist in construction administration by reviewing equipment shop drawings and conducting site visits, site reviews and preparing change notices, site instructions, etc.
- Any other tasks assigned by Principals or Project Managers required to assist in the completion of projects.
Who You Are
- Minimum two years of direct industry experience in the field of fire protection services.
- Diploma/Degree from a fire protection or building services/engineering program.
- A C.E.T. with equivalent experience and abilities will be considered.
- Direct experience and proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, Navisworks Manage, and Dynamo software.
- Knowledge of the British Columbia Building Code and NFPA Standards.
- Knowledge of all Microsoft Office suites, specifically Word and Excel.
- Working knowledge with various fire protection systems including wet, dry, pre-action and gas suppression.
- Familiar with structural, architectural, and electrical models to appreciate space limitations and interferences.
- Familiar with municipal and provincial codes and authorities.
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment driven by project deadlines.
- Highly innovative and motivated with an attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients.
- Able to work independently, as well as contribute to the team.
Nice to Have
- LEED certification / Experience implementing sustainable design (LEED projects) is an asset
- Member of the BC Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers
