External Communications Manager – maternity cover
Bristol (alongside remote working)
Competitive salary + benefits
About us
Hoare Lea is an award-winning engineering consultancy with a creative team of engineers, designers, and technical specialists. We provide innovative solutions through human-centric and planet-conscious design to complex engineering challenges for buildings.
We are committed to providing a diverse environment for everyone as well as a commitment to a sustainable present and future.
Look around you. There is, likely, a Hoare Lea’s project in your area.
Why work for us?
The Hoare Lea Marketing team is a small but effective and energetic group of people, all working in-house. We’re a friendly bunch, who help each other out whenever needed, and we welcome new ideas, fresh approaches, and excitement.
We are the firm’s go-to team for all things communication, content, and high-level marketing – whether that be through strategy development, general guidance, or more practical day-to-day content creation. Take a look at the Hoare Lea website to get a feel for everything we create externally: from events, insights, and films, to an industry-leading magazine, podcast, and thought leadership.
We predominately support the firm in the sectors and specialisms in which it has expertise, but also more broadly in terms of the firm’s role in reacting to the climate emergency, human-centric design, ESG, and Corporate Responsibility.
The role
We need an experienced External Comms Manager to help us continue to deliver our exceptional external marketing activities during maternity leave. You’ll be managing the small (2-3 person) External Comms team, and working closely with the Marketing Director, Studio Manager, and other team members to strategise and coordinate how the firm presents itself to our clients, industry, and wider audiences through brand, campaigns, thought leadership projects, plus our regular channels such as magazine, podcast, website, and social media.
You’ll get to grips with our brand and the wide variety of sectors/specialisms that the firm works in, then put your editorial and management skills to use. You’ll understand how to bring people on board with your storytelling and marketing ideas, create written and multimedia content that cements and builds on our reputation, work with agencies where needed, and ensure the quality and quantity of our external marketing continues to push our brand forward.
Alongside this, you’ll support the External Comms team with their ownership over their projects and day-to-day work – such as supporting the Content Editor with magazine planning and storytelling; the Marketing Coordinator with proofreading support and task coordination; and the Senior PR Specialist with big-picture messaging and editorial quality. You’ll also be the first line of support to the Marketing Director, helping to coordinate firm-wide engagement with the development of our external brand, and other large-scale projects that keep our external communications industry-leading. We promise the role will be fun, varied, and stimulating.
What we are looking for
- A great communicator: someone who knows what good content and strategic B2B marketing looks like, and is able to confidently articulate this to people at all levels across the firm, and execute it quickly and effectively while maintaining the highest levels of quantity
- Someone who thrives on the desire to ‘juggle a lot of balls’; you’ll be jumping from online meetings with directors to proofreading content; from writing video scripts to checking in with the team; and from strategic brainstorming on a project to getting involved with the content of our annual event
- High-quality writing skills: you can take complex or dry information to craft an engaging read, and can proofread and spot inconsistencies/typos
- You know how to find and ‘sell’ a marketing POV / story / approach, managing the expectations of wider firm colleagues and leaders who don’t have an in-depth understanding of Marketing
- You’ll probably have at least eight years of relevant editorial experience under your belt, and have an understanding of in-house B2B Marketing Team working and stakeholder engagement
