Associate Director/ Director Permanent Salary: £50,000+ (DoE) Who we are: Baker Consultants is driven by our commitment to delivering the highest quality work and a passion for our people. We are always striving to innovate and are obsessed with the intricacies of nature conservation law, policy & best practice and how all of these interact to influence the work we do for our clients. We have doubled in size over the last three years, adding some excellent talent to the team. We have also launched a sister business to bring our cutting-edge soil ecoacoustics service to market. As a result, there is an exciting opportunity for someone to join our senior leadership team within Baker Consultants to help us manage our projects and develop our team so that both businesses can continue to flourish. We don’t chase routine or high-volume survey work – instead, we seek out interesting projects and strategic advisory roles so that our team can deliver commercial advice at all points along a project’s timeline supported by the best science. We support projects across the whole of the UK, working from site acquisition and survey, all the way through planning, public inquiries and onto the construction & monitoring phases. If you were interested enough to read this advert, then hopefully you already know a bit about us and what we stand for. The senior members of our team have been with the business for many years – some since the very beginning in 2009 – a testament to the training, culture and variety of work we take on. We have an enviably low staff turnover rate, which reflects how much we value our staff’s wellbeing and their happiness at work – something that culminated in us successfully adopting a permanent 4-day week in January 2024.

Who we’re looking for: We are looking for someone highly experienced who can bring their own technical excellence, commercial acumen and line management skills to enhance our existing senior team. You will ideally have at least 10 years of leadership experience, a confident approach to dealing with clients and the ability to manage and oversee multiple complex projects. This role will provide the opportunity to mentor and develop junior staff, as well as use your own technical knowledge to support our clients on projects of your own. You should have at least one highly developed area of expertise and candidates with skills in Bat Mitigation Licenses, HRA, EcIA or Ecoacoustics (of any kind) are encouraged to apply. Because of our reputation as a leader in the profession, we also take on a high volume of Public Inquiry and Expert Witness work. If you have existing experience (or an interest) in this area, we can also offer a unique opportunity to work alongside and learn from one of the UK’s leading experts in this field. You will be given all the support needed to become embedded into the team, with the autonomy to manage projects and your own time. You may be working in another consultancy; in a local authority and seeking the freedom to expand your horizons, or keen to develop an area of interest which is currently untapped or unsupported. We are always open to new ideas, adopting or developing new technology and new ways of working.

What we can offer you: We are a highly effective team, who have always used remote working to give our staff the maximum amount of flexibility so they can find the best work/life balance that suits them. We are also entirely focused on adding the best people and those with the right attitude, so that they add real value to the team. We offer a competitive salary of £50k+ (dependant on experience) a discretionary bonus scheme, a range of other benefits, including five weeks of annual leave (plus Bank Holidays) and a contributory pension scheme. We’ve previously won multiple CIEEM awards (for Small Consultancy of the Year and Innovation) and we were Highly Commended in the Medium Consultancy category in June 2024. So, whether you’re into research, passionate about a particular species-group, interacting with clients or want to join a progressive and supportive workplace, then please get in touch.

For an informal chat and to learn more about the role, please call Gavin Ward (Consultancy Director) on 07795 122 464. Alternatively, you can email your CV and a covering letter to [email protected] to apply.
