DevOps Application Engineer (0,8 - 1 FTE)

About IS/IT

In fast changing markets, customers worldwide rely on Thales. Thales is a business where brilliant people from all over the world come together to share ideas and inspire each other. In aerospace, transportation, defense, security and space, our architects design innovative solutions that make our tomorrow's possible.

Our Thales Netherlands IS/IT team works at the core of the Thales digital transformation. With a team of 130+ colleagues divided into 15 – mostly product related – Agile DevOps squads. We provide IS/IT support to our 2500 Dutch colleagues in several Business Lines and functions. We also work closely together with the international IS/IT departments of the Thales Group. Our mission? Providing secure access to Thales information in one click, while feeling proud together. As an innovative, high-tech organization we fully embrace agile principles and strive for excellence by continuous improvement. We do not fear to fail, as long as we can learn from it!

IT-Engineering Support (IT EngSup) is part of the IS/IT department of Thales Netherlands. The IT Engineering Support chapter (following the Spotify model) consist of 30 enthusiastic IT engineers and Consultants divided in three self-managing squads working together closely using the Agile way of working. The chapter consists of systems-, software-, and IT architects, application specialists and infrastructure specialists. We collect requirements, validate them against security protocols & design solutions and implement them together with the end users, but also with the other IS/IT squads. We maintain our own products and projects and are involved with the latest IS/IT developments within the Thales Group.

About the job

The day begins with a stand-up in which the squad assesses what they have achieved yesterday, what they are going to do today, and if they experience or foresee impediments. After the stand-up you’ll start working on deploying or improving the tooling and providing support to engineers. You are continuously working on the improvement of collaboration, within your own squad, but also between other squads. Following the Scrum principles, you work with the squad in two-weekly sprints in which you provide Software Engineers with new tooling - mostly based on Linux - and supporting them in optimizing and/or automating of the use of those tools. Within these activities you’ll be responsible for:

  • automation of existing and future processes and applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Puppet and Ansible;
  • supporting software engineers with their CI/CD workflows and/or pipelines;
  • the roll-out and maintenance of tools in close collaboration with Engineering Support teams in other Thales countries;
  • having an active role in developing interfaces between different tools and Engineering disciplines;
  • actively introducing new technologies for the benefit of the team;
  • working together with the Linux team and the team responsible for Systems Engineering Applications

About you

We are looking for a new colleague with:

  • a technical (IT/Engineering) education background;
  • at least 3 years of experience in a similar role/job;
  • knowledge about deploying and managing engineering applications like Jenkins, Nexus, Bitbucket and SonarQube;
  • experience with automation via Puppet and Ansible;
  • experience with deploying and maintaining MySQL and PostgreSQL databases;
  • interest in containers (Docker, Podman) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Rancher);
  • extensive knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (6/7/8) systems;
  • experience with shell scripting and ansible;
  • a customer-oriented attitude and good communication skills;
  • good problem solving abilities and persistence;
  • good command of English, both written and oral.

What’s in it for you

  • Become part of a great team in a high tech, innovative international organization
  • (International) opportunities for growth in tech-, management- and commercial roles
  • Attention for personal development and own initiative
  • A nice workplace in a modern building, where we value a good work-life balance and flexibility
  • 40 leave days per year, travel expenses and a flexible benefits à la carte package with options like purchase/sale of leave hours, internet costs, bicycle plan, company fitness, trade union contribution or relocation costs
