Product Group is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of the BBC’s portfolio of digital products.

We are Product Data Domains

The Product Data Domains teams is a newly formed set of teams creating and maintaining trusted datasets and data products within Product Group. We have multiple teams within the function, responsible for expertise and knowledge of different sub-domains. We work in multi-skilled teams – from Product Data managers, analytics developers, data engineers and tracking implementation specialists. We work closely with our colleagues from across the organisation.

The Senior Data Visualisation Specialist is a new role that sits in the Product Data Domain teams. You will use the highly governed data sets produced by the Product Data Domains team to design, produce and maintain critical automated reporting and dashboards for use within the BBC’s digital estate. You will work alongside our Product Data Managers to gather requirements from a variety of stakeholders across all product teams and senior management, and translate them into easy-to-use, accessible, well-maintained, performant data visualisation suite which could include automated reporting.

You will also be working with our Data Governance colleagues to ensure that our dashboards conform to data quality and our dashboard kitemarking processes.

Finally, you will support other teams insider the wider Product Data function with data visualisation best practice. You will contribute to our communities of practice including Tableau, and be responsible for driving innovation within the data visualisation space.

Responsibilities

Role and responsibilities will comprise of:

•    Creating, maintaining and iterating on dashboards and data visualisations that will support automated reporting

•    Establishing and communicating best practices in data visualisation in Product Group, including considerations around user experience, data interpretation, and accessibility

•    Bring in best practice and innovation on new visualisation libraries, keeping the wider org informed of the latest development in visualisation

•    Working in cross-disciplinary teams to understand stakeholder goals, objectives and requirements

•    Establishing best practice on data storage, preparation and cleansing specifically for visualisation use

•    Developing a framework for tracking delivery of dashboards across stakeholders, ensuring they are in use, secure and up to date

Are you the right candidate

When it comes to data visualisation specialists at the BBC we look for these skills:

Technical Skills

•    At least 5 years’ experience in a Data Analyst, Analytics Engineering or Front end developer role with a focus on data visualisation

•    Extensive experience using an enterprise data visualisation tool e.g. Tableau, Looker

•    Experience coding in SQL, Python or R

•    Experience of implementing best practices and guidelines in data visualisation

•    Experience of working with visualisation libraries such as D3 or data heavy applications such as Streamlit

•    Good working knowledge of git and software development processes

•    Good working knowledge of Data Warehouse technologies (Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery)

•    Comfortable working alongside cross-functional teams interacting with Product Managers, Engineers, Data Scientists, and Analysts

Teamwork and stakeholder management

•    Ability to listen to others’ ideas and build on them

•    Ability to clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences.

•    Ability to collaborate effectively, working alongside other team members towards the team’s goals, and enabling others to succeed, where possible.

•    Ability to prioritise. A structured approach and ability to bring other on the journey.

•    Strong attention to detail
