As a Character Artist at Ubisoft Montréal, you will create people, creatures, and animals with which players can interact and connect. You will combine your artistic sense and technical expertise to shape the physical traits that define the characters populating our worlds.

You will enjoy designing detailed, complex, and expressive characters. Creating blend shapes, ensuring good topology, and producing optimized meshes will be opportunities to hone your skills. You will regularly seek feedback from colleagues to refine your work and establish solid foundations for bringing characters to life.

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate with art and narrative teams to understand the creative and artistic vision of the game.
  • Study concept art and narrative guidelines, research your own references to prototype characters (faces, morphology, clothing, etc.).
  • Develop and refine your creations through the 3D pipeline: modeling, sculpting, texturing, retopology, and UV unwrapping.
  • Balance artistic aspects and technical constraints to reconcile aesthetics and functionality.
  • Work with riggers and animators to make character movements believable.
  • Incorporate feedback from colleagues into your designs.
  • Adapt your designs to evolving project needs.

Qualifications:

  • Experience creating stylized characters and clothing.
  • Strong sense of visual storytelling, personality, and emotional depth in character art.
  • Proficiency with 2D tools (e.g., Photoshop) and 3D software (3DS Max, Maya, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, ZBrush).
  • Deep understanding of topology, materials, textures, proportions, and anatomy, as well as game production constraints (polygon count, memory).
  • Creative, collaborative, and innovative mindset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Motivation to solicit and apply constructive feedback.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving project vision.
  • Knowledge of photogrammetry and optimization techniques is a plus.
  • Interest in cozy or sandbox-style games is a plus.
