Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord is hiring a technical, hands-on, empathetic senior software engineer to help define and deliver our Platform as a Service (PAAS) mission: build platform solutions to accelerate every Engineer at our company. With your expertise in building and using best-in-class infrastructure tools, you’ll equip our engineering organization with tools to move quickly and deliver features that bring millions of people together.

As a senior engineer on the PAAS team, you’ll collaborate with the team to deliver forward-looking, customer-centric tooling. You’ll make sure our solutions are crafted for a friction-free developer experience, have outsized impact across nearly every Engineering team, and help us articulate the golden path from development into production. You’ll be reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager for Platform Engineering, ensuring we build scalable, secure-by-default, and easy-to-use infrastructure tooling.

What you'll do

  • You’ll work with the Internal Development Experience (IDX) team to ensure an easy path to go from development through staging into production, and
  • You’ll work with the Platform Security team in order to secure every path to production
  • You’ll ship Rust code to YAY, our in-house deployment tooling built around Google Kubernetes Engine and Temporal
  • You’ll expose the full flexibility of Kubernetes for users while abstracting the complexities away
  • You’ll build tools to manage the configuration, observability, and scaling characteristics of our infrastructure

What you should have

  • 5+ years of experience in software development with a focus on tooling, infrastructure, and automation
  • Experience working in multi-milestone and even multi-quarter projects
  • Expertise and empathy when troubleshooting issues with customer engineering teams
  • Expertise using and building upon the primitives of standard cloud infrastructure tooling like Kubernetes, Docker
  • Experience developing in cloud-based environments (we use Google Cloud; knowledge of Amazon Web Services and/or Azure also great!)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling (we use Terraform)
  • Broad experience across many domains and technologies and comfort in diving into something new

Bonus Points

  • You have deep experience with CI, build, and deployment technologies like Buildkite, Bazel, and Terraform
  • You’ve built and deployed your own Kubernetes operator
  • You have experience with cloud networking tools like istio, envoy, etc
  • You’re already using Rust regularly
  • You’ve used Datadog and/or Sentry and are comfortable supporting application observability in those platforms
  • You’ve built open source software integrated by other developers
  • You’ve worked with a security engineering team to threat model your work
