Job Introduction

We are looking for a new Content Editor for the BBC Audio Science unit. With a background and  track record in science or health, you will have experience of selling, developing and delivering programmes and podcasts. It is a busy and demanding role, but unique and rewarding.

About BBC Audio Wales & West of England

BBC Audio Wales and West of England brings together radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol making programmes for UK networks as well as the BBC World Service and BBC Sounds. Staff have opportunities for collaborating, developing ideas and their careers and access to a wide range of output across science, health, factual, rural affairs, food, documentaries, current affairs, music and drama.

This role is based at BBC Central Square, in the heart of the Welsh Capital. It’s the newest BBC building with state-of-the-art studios and outstanding environmental standards.

Main Responsibilities

The Editor oversees a wide range of output covering all aspects of science and health. Some of the current output includes programmes such as Inside Science, Inside Health, Health Check, Science in Action, All in the Mind, Crowd Science and Unexpected Elements, as well as a range of podcast titles. The Editor is expected to take a lead in devising and selling new programmes and formats.

Are you the right candidate?

You will need to have strong experience in science or health content making and to have generated ideas across a range of platforms. You will have proven experience of leading and managing teams and talent and the ability to inspire others to do their best work.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following:

  • An in depth understanding of the contemporary world of science and/or health
  • Experience of selling and making compelling, innovative science and/or health content
  • An in-depth knowledge of the UK and international audio market, including our main services; BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service and BBC Sounds.
  • The skills and experience to lead, motivate and manage a diverse team, including managing development and performance.
  • Highly developed planning and organising skills with the ability to manage several areas of work at one time, deliver to deadlines and to react positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be in BBC Cardiff for a minimum of two full days a week
