Job Introduction

BBC Monitoring provides news and information based on open-source media from around the world. BBC Monitoring’s main activity is the provision of a subscription driven web service providing media coverage reporting for a wide range of commercial customers that include Governments, Intergovernmental Organisations, Academia, Corporate entities, Research Institutes and Think Tanks. BBC Monitoring's service also supports its customers in understanding the issues and media environments through specialised access to relevant and trusted media sources and offers bespoke reports and tailored service designed around specific customer needs.

BBC Monitoring has nearly 230 staff in the UK and in 12 international offices.  We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Development Manager to join the team in Brussels.  Working directly to the Head of Business Development, BBC Monitoring (based in London) you will be responsible for defining, implementing, and achieving BBC Monitoring’s commercial growth strategy in Europe.

Main Responsibilities

  • Acquire new organisations as subscribers for BBC Monitoring web service
  • Identify market segments and key prospects, create a commercial strategy to drive revenue growth and market expansion within mainland Europe.
  • To be the first point of contact towards potential customers, leading demos and pitches, strategically building new subscription driving deals
  • Implement a systematic pricing policy in line with BBC Monitoring’s policy, and maintain appropriate information systems
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with key customers and prospects
  • Tracking feedback to drive continuous commercial growth through customer expansion
  • Analysing market trends and competition landscape to facilitate feedback loop for product development, and to recommend appropriate action to influence the market environment in BBCM’s interest.
  • Work closely with Business Development team (based in London) and ensure that day-to-day business activities are consistent with the overall Business Development strategy
  • Work with BBC lawyers to lead contract negotiations wherever required, enabling BBC Monitoring to form long-term commercial relationships without compromising the BBC’s reputation, independence, or editorial integrity.
  • Work effectively with the regional senior management teams of other BBC divisions to ensure wherever possible that the BBC maximises its global impact by presenting as far as possible one face to the market.
  • Actively represent BBC Monitoring in relevant forums in the market area and to travel extensively throughout mainland Europe.
  • Recruit and manage staff. To appraise, set objectives and actively encourage their development and to promote a culture which encourages and supports the BBC’s values.

Are you the right candidate?

You should possess and demonstrate in-depth understanding of the commercial opportunities available in mainland Europe to grow BBC Monitoring’s subscription service.  You will be expected to develop a thorough knowledge of BBC Monitoring output.  You will work to the Head of Business Development and report periodically on performance against targets.  The role will require a very close working relationship with the London based BBC Monitoring Business Development team and the wider BBC Monitoring team.

Key skills & experience required:

  • Significant work experience in a commercial sales and/or business development environment in Europe.
  • Experience of working with Governments in Europe in open-source media intelligence and/or private sector in operational risk assessment/global security operations.
  • Demonstrated experience of generating revenue through a subscription service.
  • Demonstrated experience of performing against targets.
